According to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of a stabbing just after 12 a.m. on Wednesday, July 10, on the 4600 block of Crane St.

At the scene, deputies located the victim, a 30-year-old woman, suffering from multiple lacerations and stab wounds. The victim’s injuries were significant and required immediate hospitalization, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Witnesses at the scene had reportedly detained a second individual until deputies arrived. Deputies identified this individual — Maria Hernandez-Rueles, 25 — as the primary suspect in the stabbing.

The Sheriff’s Office reported that Hernandez-Ruelas and the victim were known to each other but did not specify further.

Hernandez-Ruelas was arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide and later booked at the Humboldt County Correctional Facility.

The investigation is ongoing, the Sheriff’s Office said. Anyone with information relevant to the case is encouraged to reach out to the Sheriff’s Office at 707-445-7251 or the Crime Tip line at 707-268-2539.
