Hesperia Man Dies Following Stabbing; Suspect Administers CPR, Claims Self-Defense

On the evening of July 8, 2024, at about 9:20 p.m., Hesperia Police Department deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 16500 block of Sequoia Street following a report of a stabbing. Upon arrival, they found Daniel Cook, 62, administering Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to Ruben Castillo, 59, who had multiple stab wounds. Castillo was quickly transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The incident unfolded after Castillo, a resident of Apple Valley, forcibly entered the home through a window. The home belonged to his ex-girlfriend. Inside, he encountered Cook, leading to a physical altercation during which Castillo was stabbed. It was reported that Cook’s actions were in defense of life and property.

The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division, Homicide Detail, took over the investigation. They have briefed the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office on the details of the incident. A comprehensive report will be submitted to the District Attorney’s office for further review.
