An individual was recently arrested after allegedly leading a Merced County deputy on a high-speed pursuit.
Around 6:30 p.m. on July 25, a deputy attempted to pull over a car speeding at over 100 miles per hour near Santa Fe Drive and Highway 59 in Merced, the Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.
The driver, identified as Gerardo Silva-Hernandez, allegedly did not stop and continued driving at a high speed into Merced.
The deputy briefly lost sight of the vehicle but soon located it traveling in the opposite direction.
The pursuit reportedly reached speeds of over 100 miles per hour, and the deputy terminated the pursuit due to heavy traffic and safety concerns near Santa Fe Drive and Business Park Way, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
As the deputy approached the intersection of Franklin Road and Santa Fe Drive, Silva-Hernandez’s car reportedly collided with another vehicle.
From there, Silva-Hernandez reportedly fled on foot into a nearby cornfield.
The deputy pursued Silva-Hernandez and apprehended him shortly afterward.
Silva-Hernandez was subsequently booked into Merced County jail on charges of failing to yield, fleeing the scene of an accident, and reckless driving.
