A Humboldt County man has been sentenced to 21 years in prison for a fatal shooting in July of 2023.
In a press release, the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office announced that the sentence had been handed down against Gregory N. Mattox, 25, for the July 2, 2023, fatal shooting of 36-year-old Joshua Gephart.
Mattox had been convicted in December of 2023 of voluntary manslaughter, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and providing false information to law enforcement with the intent to evade justice.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, Mattox and Gephart had “briefly interacted” outside the front gate of a business in Arcata. Mattox shot and killed Gephart following this interaction and fled the scene on a bicycle.
Local businesses provided surveillance video from the area, which allowed investigators to identify Mattox as the primary suspect.
On Wednesday, July 31, Mattox was sentenced to 21 years and eight months in prison.
