Assault Suspect Reportedly Shot by Victim in San Mateo, Police Investigating

San Mateo police are reportedly investigating an incident in which an assault victim shot their alleged attacker.

According to a press release, officers responded on the morning of August 2 to a “frantic” 9-1-1 call reporting that someone had crashed into the reporting party’s car and that this individual had been shot.

Officers reportedly located the scene of the incident near the intersection of 19th Avenue and Grant Street, where they also located the victim and a witness.

Officers learned that the suspect, whose name has not been released, allegedly drove a U-Haul box truck to where the victim was parked and the two had gotten into an argument. The suspect allegedly retrieved a large metal pipe from the truck and struck the victim multiple times. The victim then allegedly drew a .22 caliber pistol and shot the suspect.

The suspect then allegedly returned to the truck, put it in reverse, and drove it at the victim, colliding with the victim’s car and nearly running the victim over.

The suspect then fled the scene, police said.

The victim was treated at an area hospital and later released.

Police reportedly located the suspect at a hospital in Palo Alto, where they remain in stable condition.

The investigation is active and ongoing, and no further details have been made available as of yet.

Anyone with information relevant to the incident is encouraged to reach out to the San Mateo Police Department.
