Sacramento, CA – A 29-year-0ld man reportedly beat his mother and set her afire.
According to Sacramento county Sheriff’s Central division patrol deputies, as well as fire officials, responded to a home on Alta Mesa Road in South Sacramento on Aug. 28 around 2:40 pm. The call came in as a “woman down on her driveway,” according to a worker at the home.
“When deputies arrived it was clear the woman had been assaulted and was deceased,” officials said.
Responding officers became aware that the decedent’s adult son was “likely” still inside the main house. They began efforts to have him exit the home.
Following multiple PA announcements, the son, identified as John Martinez, 29, refused o leave the home or talk with deputies outside the home.
SWAT and Hostage negotiators and multiple resources, including K9, drone, armored vehicles were all deployed to the scene. Efforts to communicate with Martinez were unsuccessful for several hours.
Around 8 .m. SWAT entered the residence and took Martinez into custody.
Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators began their investigation, interviewed witnesses and gathered evidence.

Detectives learned that Martinez hit his 64-year old mother repeatedly with a shovel, ran her over with his vehicle and tried to set her on fire. He was arrested on suspicion of murder and taken to the Sac County Main Jail where he remains and is ineligible for bail He’s scheduled to appear in court Aug. 30, 2024.
