San Francisco Police Make Arrests in Coordinated Auto Burglary Suppression Operation
On September 7, 2024, the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) undertook a significant operation to address auto burglary crimes in the city. Officers from multiple stations collaborated in a suppression operation that eventually led to two key arrests.
The incident began when plainclothes officers from Central Station witnessed an auto burglary near the Palace of Fine Arts. The suspect fled the scene, prompting a citywide alert and surveillance operation. This led to the observation of the suspect vehicle in several locations, continuing to engage in criminal activity. After a sequence of pursuits and coordinated efforts involving several SFPD units, the vehicle was stopped following a collision in Oakland.
The suspects involved, a juvenile and 27-year-old Robert Sonza, were found in possession of stolen property and a firearm. Sonza, identified as a prolific auto burglar, faces multiple charges including possession of a stolen firearm and conspiracy to commit a felony. The juvenile was also apprehended and faces several charges but was released to a guardian.
This operation highlighted the strategic and persistent efforts of SFPD in curbing auto burglaries, contributing to a reported 56% reduction in such crimes over the past year. Chief William Scott commended the dedication of all officers involved. The investigation remains active, and the public is encouraged to provide any relevant information to the SFPD Tip Line.
