Upon arrival, officers found the victim, 49-year-old Enrique Gomez from Turlock, on the ground and began administering first aid. Despite their efforts, and those of Turlock Fire and Patterson District Ambulance, Gomez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Thanks to witness statements and collected evidence, Detectives quickly identified the suspect vehicle and the individual involved. Utilizing License Plate Reader (LPR) technology and collaborating with Modesto Police Department, detectives were able to locate and arrest 28-year-old Ahmad Abweny of Modesto just hours after the incident. Abweny has been booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of murder.
“The use of license plate reader technology allowed our detectives to quickly piece together critical evidence and apprehend the suspect,” said Chief Jason Hedden. “This case demonstrates the power of modern technology in enhancing public safety and ensuring prompt resolution for any crime committed in our city.”
