MONTEREY, CA   –    “On Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at 9:51 P.M., Monterey Police Officers responded to a residence in the 400 block of David Avenue for a report of an intoxicated subject, identified as Giuseppi Abbruzzetti 24 years old, causing a disturbance inside the residence. The reporting party stated Abbruzzetti was breaking items inside and acting erratically.

MPD Officers arrived on scene and contacted the reporting party inside the residence. Abbruzzetti then emerged from a bedroom holding a ten inch kitchen knife and challenged officers. Officers attempted to deescalate Abbruzzetti, but he refused to drop the knife and speak with them. Officers evacuated the residence leaving Abbruzzetti inside alone. While officers were outside, Abbruzzetti attempted to open an exterior door of the residence, but an officer held the door shut to avoid a confrontation. Abbruzzetti threatened to stab officers and stated he was prepared to die.

Officers deployed several less lethal options to protect themselves and the public including Tasers, pepper spray, 40MM sponge round launchers, and a plexiglass shield. An officer with Crisis Negotiation Team training was also on scene, but Abbruzzetti refused to negotiate with officers.

Abbruzzetti then crawled out a bedroom window holding a sheathed sword and began walking on David Avenue. Officers ordered him to drop the sword, but he refused. One officer deployed pepper spray at Abbruzzetti’s face while another officer deployed five 40MM sponge rounds that struck his hip and hand. Abbruzzetti then dropped the sword, and he was taken to the ground by officers and arrested. At one point during the arrest, Abbruzzetti spit on an officer and continued to threaten them with violence.

Abbruzzetti was transported by police vehicle to CHOMP for a medical evaluation and suffered no serious injuries. Abbruzzetti was booked into the Monterey County Jail on charges of PC 422(a) – criminal threats, PC 417(a)(1) – brandishing a deadly weapon other than a firearm, PC 417.8 – exhibiting a deadly weapon while resisting arrest, PC 243(b) – battery on a Peace Officer, PC”
