San Joaquin County deputies have reportedly arrested a man who allegedly fired at them with an AR-15 after mistaking them for trespassers.
According to a press release by the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded just before 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31, to an alarm on Clark Drive in Stockton. Upon arrival, deputies observed three suspects fleeing westward from the northeast side of the property.
Two deputies pursued the individuals along a canal, taking cover behind a cement wall separating a nearby Buddhist temple from a residential area.
At the same time, a homeowner to the west received a security camera alert and contacted his grandson rather than law enforcement. The grandson, reportedly armed with an AR-15, began searching the area in a golf cart, under the mistaken belief that he was tracking the suspects.
The homeowner’s grandson then encountered the deputies on the temple property. Before the deputies could identify themselves, the grandson allegedly chambered a round and fired two shots in their direction. One of the shots struck the cement wall below the spot where a deputy had been positioned, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The deputies took cover and issued commands, which the individual followed.
The suspect was detained without further incident and arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, possession of an assault weapon, possession of a high-capacity magazine, and possession of a silencer.
