TRACY, CA — Officers with the Tracy Police Department have reportedly arrested a man on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon in connection with a BB gun shooting that authorities say was motivated by race.
According to the Tracy Police Department, officers responded on the afternoon of Monday, Nov. 18, to the 1100 block of Dominque Drive, where it was reported that two gardeners had been shot with a BB gun.
Responding officers located the victims, who had sustained minor injuries but reportedly did not require medical attention.
Based on information provided by the victims, the crime appears to have been racially motived, police said. Officers were directed to a residence across the street where the suspect had retreated.
When officers approached the residence, the suspect went inside.
Records revealed that the suspect, whom policed identified as 38-year-old Leonardo Cabral, had a felony warrant for an alleged assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.
Tracy PD’s Crisis Response Unit responded to the scene and convinced Cabral to come outside, at which point he was arrested without further incident.
Cabral was booked at the San Joaquin County jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and violation of civil rights by force or threat of force, police said.
