HOLLISTER, CA  —  A 43 year old Hollister man has been arrested on suspicion of elder abuse for the alleged severe neglect of his grandmother.

According to a press release, the Hollister police department received a report on Tuesday, Dec. 10, regarding an 83-year-old woman who had been admitted to the hospital. Investigators discovered that the woman had not been properly cared for over the last several weeks, resulting in significant injury and leaving her in critical condition.

Although medical personnel were able to make her more comfortable, her condition remains critical due to the extent of her injuries, police said.

Detectives then carried out a search warrant at the home of the victim’s grandson, where she had been living, and discovered that she had been kept living in “substandard” conditions in her room.

The victim’s grandson and caretaker, whom police identified as 43-year-old Samuel Gonzales, was arrested and booked on suspicion of attempted involuntary manslaughter and elder abuse.

Police also notified San Benito County Health and Human Services of the investigation.
