Suspect Fleeing on a Bicycle Didn’t Pedal Fast Enough

BRENTWOOD — A burglary suspect attempting to flee on a bicycle was unable
to pedal fast enough to get away from police. The suspect who was ultimately
arrested is no stranger to law enforcement.
Officers responding to a burglary alarm spotted him exiting from the back door of
Brentwood business. When the suspect saw the police, he hopped onto a
bicycle, but he didn’t get far. He was apprehended nearby and taken into
custody.
The commercial burglary occurred on the 2400 block of Empire Avenue. It
happened December 13 at approximately 6 a.m. The suspect identified as
Daniel C. Whelan, 31, of Antioch, was brought to the Martinez Detention Facility.
However, he is now no longer listed in the county jail rooster.
Brentwood PD released a prepared statement about this incident. “Officers
recovered burglary tools, including a pry bar, knife, gloves, and stolen property
belonging to the business.”
Whelan faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, pending a review of
his case. Whelan was booked on suspicion of second-degree burglary, receiving
stolen property, and possession of burglary tools. He was also booked for
delaying/obstructing/resisting a police officer.
Whelan has a criminal record in Contra Costa County. He has prior convictions
for second-degree commercial burglary, and attempted grand theft of personal
property. He also has a prior arrest record for burglary, and possession of a
narcotic controlled substance, in San Joaquin County.
