16 year-old Arrested in Gang Related Shooting
Oceanside- The Oceanside Police Department arrested a 16-year-old boy on Wednesday on suspicion of shooting a 20-year-old man in an apartment complex. Officers believe the incident to be gang-related.
Officers were called at about 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday night, according to Oceanside Police Lieutenant Leonard Mata.
Once they responded to the scene, officers found the victim lying on the ground in front of the apartment complex, which is located at 415 Grant Street.
The man was visiting his aunt who lives inside the apartment complex. He later walked outside her apartment to a group hanging near a gate that leads to the street. He was then shot with a small caliber pistol in the chest then ran back inside his aunt’s apartment, where he later collapsed unconscious.
The victim is a documented gang member. He was later airlifted to a local trauma center, where Mata notes he is expected to survive his injuries.
Officers saw the 16-year-old suspect running from the crime scene along with several other juveniles. Officers caught up with the suspect and arrested him. With the help of police dogs, officers searched the neighborhood for the other juveniles but were not able to find any.
The teen is known to have ties to certain gangs. He was later booked into Juvenile Hall on suspicion of attempted murder and participation in a criminal street gang.
