Narcotics suspect shot, wounded by police

FONTANA — Police shot and wounded a narcotics suspect this weekend after she attempted to run into an officer with her vehicle.

Sonia Hawley was struck in the forearm during a narcotics investigation.

“She was hit one time,” said Fontana Sgt. Jeff Decker, adding there were two officers involved. “They were on foot when it happened.”

Fontana police turned over the investigation to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s, said Decker.

“That’s policy any time there’s an officer-involved shooting,” he explained. “Any time anyone is shot, or killed, we have to turn it over to another agency.”

The incident occurred late Saturday night on the 16000 block of Merrill Avenue. The suspect, Hawley, 32, is on parole for similar crimes involving narcotics, said Decker.

Decker did not know whether Hawley was under the influence at the time she was shot.

Hawley was treated at a local hospital and then booked into West Valley Detention Center in nearby Rancho Cucamonga for investigation of attempted murder, according to the statement and jail records.

Fontana is a city located in San Bernardino County, about10 miles west of San Bernardino.
