Deputies kill knife-wielding man
NUEVO – A man wielding a knife and acting irrationally was shot and killed by Riverside County sheriff’s deputies early Sunday.
Law enforcement officials have not released the man’s name pending notification of his next of kin.
Joe Borja, spokesman for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, said the man ignored several commands to drop the knife, eventually approaching two deputies in a threatening manner.
“They kept giving him orders to turn over the knife, but he wasn’t doing what they told him to do,” Borja said. “It’s possible he was under the influence of something, but we weren’t able to determine that.”
The man, believed to be in his 40s, was shot an undisclosed number of times. Attempts to aid the man were unsuccessful.
Deputies had been called between 9 and 10 a.m. about a disturbance at Lakeview Avenue and Ninth Street, a sparsely populated area of the city. The deputies involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave pending an investigation in accordance with department policy.
Nuevo is located approximately 25 miles southeast of Riverside.
