SAN MARCOS — Strange that an armed suspect should phone the cops and tell them exactly what he looks like, where he’s going, and that he intends to open fire on any police he should encounter. But nobody said 23-year-old Luis Bolanos was interested in keeping a low profile.
Bolanos called 9-1-1 at around 6:23 a.m. on December 31 claiming that his cousin had been shot by an unknown male suspect, and that he himself was armed with a loaded handgun and on his way to Palomar College.
Deputies from San Marcos, Vista, and Valley Center were quick to act, arriving and swiftly establishing a perimeter around the campus. It wasn’t long before Bolanos was discovered near the western edge of campus — in possession of a loaded firearm, just as he’d claimed — and taken into custody without incident.
Along with the assistance of the Sheriff’s Helicopter, deputies searched the campus to ensure there’d been no victims of any assault. None were found and there has so far been no confirmation that Bolanos’ cousin had been injured. Nonetheless, the investigation continues under the eye of the Sheriff’s San Marcos Detective Bureau.
