SANTA BARBARA — A Hollywood star’s wife is in further trouble with the law for not wanting to leave her husband’s side.
On Nov. 4, both Academy Award-nominated film star Randy Quaid and his wife Evi failed to appear for arraignment as scheduled in Santa Barbara Superior Court.
According to their attorney Robert Sanger’s remarks to the press that afternoon, “my clients have a pending appearance in the Canadian courts which precluded their presence in Santa Barbara.”
The Quaids are in Vancouver, British Columbia seeking political asylum based upon claims of persecution by “Hollywood star whackers” out to assassinate them. Randy Quaid is currently scheduled for appearances in Canadian immigration court on Nov. 8, and is confined to Canada as a condition of bail imposed upon him in that country. Evi Quaid is a Canadian citizen under no legal obligation to remain in Canada, and, according to Santa Barbara Superior Court Judge Donna Geck, “remains under bond to this jurisdiction.”
When questioned by Judge Geck about Evi Quaid’s failure to appear as ordered by the court, attorney Sanger made an argument for the court’s understanding that “Mrs. Quaid does not want to be separated from her husband under these circumstances.”
Geck ruled that Evi Quaid was in violation of the terms of bail set earlier, ordered her bail of $500,000 forfeited, and issued a bench warrant for her arrest.
Both Randy and Evi Quaid, who have been generating a series of charges based upon missed court appearances, continue to face felony charges of vandalism and trespassing in connection with the disputed sale of their former residence in Santa Barbara, which they claim was the result of fraud and forgery. Evi Quaid is also charged with resisting arrest and violation of probation.
