TEHACHAPI — Police arrested a husband and wife on Thursday on charges of mail theft and illegal weapons in Bear Valley Springs.
Jeanie Nelson,43, was booked into the Kern County Sheriff’s Central Receiving Facility on $173,500 bail on 14 counts of stolen property, 14 counts of theft and five counts of mail theft.
Her husband, 40-year-old Joseph Nelson, was also booked into the Central Receiving Facility in Bakersfield on charges including possession of short-barreled rifle, possession of any assault weapon and possession of large-capacity magazines
He is being held on $50,000 bail.
According to the Bear Valley Springs Police Department, the arrests came after an extensive investigation that involved officers and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service turned up evidence that tied Mrs. Nelson to multiple mail thefts in the area.
Police said they discovered DVDs, toys, tablets and other items during a search of the Nelson’s home in the 29700 block of North Lower Valley Road in Bear Valley Springs, just west of the City of Tehachapi in eastern Kern County.
Police Chief Rod Walthers said officers also found weapons in the home that were confiscated earlier in the month after Mr. Nelson had been arrested on Jan. 4, for spousal battery.
The Department of Justice determined the weapons were illegal.
