DAVIS – After attempting to squeeze past slower vehicles by using the center median of I-80 as an extra left-hand passing lane, a 22-year old Carmichael man crashed, and then assaulted firefighters who responded to reports of the accident.
The crash took place in the westbound lanes of I-80 near the County Road 32-A onramp, just west of the Yolo Causeway. According to Officer Bryan Konvalin, a California Highway Patrol Valley Division spokesperson, Cameron Trevor Maser lost control of his 2013 Kia Optima and collided with a Dodge Ram pickup truck. Maser had attempted to pass by squeezing through the narrow paved space between traffic lanes and the center median guardrail.
The collision damaged both vehicles and blasted debris into a third vehicle, a 2012 Mitsubishi Gallant driven by Melinda Aveline Hernandez Guballa, 23, of Sacramento, causing minor damage. The Ram driver, Kelly Robin Douglas, 47, of Santa Rosa, later complained of pain. Guballa was not injured.
By the time Davis firefighters arrived on the crash scene, Maser had crossed the traffic lanes on foot and was standing on the right shoulder of the freeway. According to Officer Konvalin, Maser “was not cooperative” when firefighters asked him what happened. Konvalin stated that Maser’s verbal belligerence had escalated into “combativeness” by the time CHP officers arrived. At this point the CHP officers observed that Maser was “exhibiting signs of alcohol intoxication,” performed a DUI evaluation and took him into custody.
Maser was transported to and lodged at the Yolo County Jail on charges of felony DUI, resisting arrest and driving with a suspended license.
