Three Delano Teens Arrested in Connection with Freight Train Accident
DELANO — Three Delano teenagers were arrested on Tuesday in connection with causing a train crash.
Evan Ortega, 18, was booked into the Kern County Jail on charges of vehicle theft, damaging railroad tracks, placing an obstruction on railroad tracks, causing a train wreck, providing false information to a peace officer, conspiracy and participating in a street gang. His bail has been set at $110,000. Another two 17-year-old juveniles were booked at the Kern County Juvenile Detention Facility on similar charges.
According to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, deputies from the Delano substation responded to a call of a car versus train in the area of Cecil Avenue and Highway 43, in Delano at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Feb.11. When they arrived, they found freight train that had crashed into an unoccupied vehicle that was placed on the railroad tracks.
“The deputies discovered that the vehicle was stolen,” sheriff’s public information offficer Ray Pruitt said. ” There were no injuries to any involved.”
A brief search of the area by deputies turned up the three suspects in the area of the accident. After further investigation, it was determined the subjects were involved in the incident. They were all uninjured and taken into custody without incident.
