SAN JOSE, Calif., – The San Jose Police Department received a call from a man who claimed he had just fired several rounds at a man who had tried to enter his home and rob him. The SJPD is investigating the incident as the 8th homicide of the year, due to the nature of the crime.
According to Officer Albert Morales of the San Jose Police Department, “Shots were reported on the 3500 block of Pine Ridge Way in East San Jose. A man had been dropped off at an area hospital with at least one gunshot wound”. The man’s identity is not being released pending notification of family members of his death.
Gulmaro Martinez
This comes at the heels of the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office formally charging 28-year-old Gulmaro Martinez with six counts of burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, and carjacking. It is alleged that Martinez on February 9th, 2014, forced his way into a residence on Waterman Court in San Jose and began to assault a family that was sleeping at the residence. Sgt. Heather Randol said, “Martinez was armed with a shotgun during the attack”. Two adults and a child were hurt in the attack.
By 3 am, Martinez reportedly carjacked a victim on Holly Drive, using the shotgun, and fled with the stolen car. He was soon identified by police who pursued him in the vehicle.
During the brief car chase Randol said, “Officers blocked Martinez’ path of escape, and Martinez, still armed with the shotgun, rammed a marked patrol car, injuring the officer inside”. Officer Monzon #4147 discharged his service weapon at Martinez, striking him twice. Martinez was unable to drive, but during the attempt to arrest him, he continued to struggle with officers. With several non-life threatening injuries, the suspect was transported to a local hospital, were he was later taken to the Main County Jail and booked on the charges Feb 13.
