Five Years in Prison for Man Who Took Drunken Drive through Busy Softball Field
CALEXICO – A Calexico man who hit several parked cars and drove through a girls’ softball clinic last year is now facing five years in prison.
In January 2013 on a Saturday morning around 9:30 AM, Calexico police received several calls regarding a vehicle hitting parked cars near Heber Avenue and CK Clark Street in Calexico. A man, who was later deemed intoxicated, drove a white Chevy Tahoe into a school fence and hit eight parked cars.
Parents and coaches were watching a girls’ softball clinic at the time. When witnesses saw the erratic vehicle drive into Rockwood Elementary School’s field, they quickly ushered the girls into the dugout. Soon after, the vehicle slammed into a parked car hard enough to be launched into field, landing just a few feet from the bleachers, which were full. Witnesses at the scene were shaken by the events, but several jumped into action.
When police arrived at the scene, they discovered the driver of the vehicle being detained by several angry parents. The two passengers fled the scene. These other two suspects hid in a nearby backyard, but were apprehended quickly with further assistance from witnesses.
The driver Jesus Cardona, 19, of Calexico was arrested along with passenger Manuel Camacho 21, also of Calexico and taken to county jail. The remaining passenger, 16-years-old, was taken to juvenile hall.
Cardona was charged with five counts of assault with a deadly weapon, driving under the influence, taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, several counts of vandalism, and child endangerment. Following a trial, on Friday, March 7, Cardona was sentenced to five years in prison.
