An unexpected, yet tragic event occurred on July 3, 2014, when a 15 year old victim was taking a typical walk in the area of 1000 W. Warner in Santa Ana with her 7 year old sister in the middle of the day. During their walk, an unknown suspect grabbed the 15 year old’s iPhone from her hand, and fled to the suspect vehicle, where a second unknown suspect was driving. The victim made a very questionable move in an attempt retrieve her phone back. As the car was pulling away, the victim jumped onto the trunk and held on for a short time. Unfortunately, she was unable to maintain her grasp and she fell off the vehicle and was critically injured.
According to the report, on July 5, 2014, the critically injured victim passed away from her severe injuries and the iPhone was recovered. She was later identified as Rubi Rubio.
The suspect vehicle is a light gray or silver Pontiac. The suspect is a male Hispanic that is believed to be in his late 20’s. He is about 5’8 to 5’10, with a medium build, and was wearing a black baseball hat, a white tank top, and light colored jeans.
SAPD is seeking any witnesses with information about the incident, as they try to capture the suspect.
