SACRAMENTO – Police have arrested a Sacramento couple for possible child neglect and abuse following the death of their three-month-old son on Saturday, July 26.
Sacramento Police Department spokesperson Michelle Gigante said firefighters were dispatched to an apartment on the 2900 block of North Meadows Place in Sacramento at approximately at 6:10 p.m. on Thursday, July 24 in response to a call for medical aid. Responders took the infant, Tyrese Smith, to an area hospital with undisclosed injuries. Due to his critical condition, he was rerouted to UC Davis Medical Center. He succumbed to his injuries and died at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday.
Detectives responded to UC Davis Medical Center and began an investigation into the baby’s condition, interviewing his mother, Ashleigh Smith, 27, and father Terry Scott, 19. Both were subsequently booked into Sacramento County Jail on felony child abuse/neglect charges on Thursday night, Gigante said.
The Sacramento Police Department is working collectively with the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office and the Sacramento County’s Coroner’s Office. Further charges may be amended or considered pending further investigation and autopsy results. Child Protective Services is also involved in the case. There were no other children in the home.
