The SJPD has arrested 3 individual suspects in the city’s 22nd homicide of 2014
Three people have been arrested in the stabbing death of 33-year-old San Jose resident Michael Maynard. According to Press Information Officer Albert Morales, “On July 29, 2014 at approximately 2:15 A.M., San Jose Police “911” Call Center received information about a person being physically attacked by a group of suspects in the area of South Market Street and Park Avenue in Downtown San Jose.
Witnesses called 9-1-1 to report a fight had broken out among a crowd of people. Morales said, “Upon arrival officers located an adult male suffering from multiple stab wounds”. Maynard was transported to a local area hospital where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.
The fatal stabbing occurred near the San Jose Tech Museum and Cesar Chavez Plaza
It is believed that the victim and the suspects had gotten into an argument while at the park that escalated into a fist fight with the suspects. Maynard was then stabbed by multiple suspects during the attack. Morales said, “It was during a verbal argument when the suspects stabbed the victim multiple times”.
San Jose Police homicide detectives responded to the scene and took over the investigation. According to Morales “After extensive follow up investigation, homicide detectives identified and arrested three suspects in connection with the murder of Michael Maynard”.

On Wednesday, July 30, San Jose Police arrested Suspect #1, Luis Daniel Garcia, and Suspect #2, Luis Alvarez, in the City of San Jose. Then on Saturday, August 2, the SJPD arrested Suspect #3, a Juvenile later identified as Marvin Garcia, Luis Garcia’s brother. He is being charged as an adult in the killing.
There has been speculation about whether the attack was gang related. Maynard’s family insisted that he had no gang affiliations himself, but that he was attacked by gang members while walking in the area at night after visiting friends in the area. A witness had reported that the assailants yelled gang slogans during the assault.
