VENTURA – Some guys just don’t know when to take a hint.
By all appearances, John Brophy, a 29-year old resident of Ventura, is one of those guys. As early as January of this year, a 28-year-old female complained to police that Brophy had been “harrassing her at her place of business,” according to the report filed by Ventura County Sheriff Public Information Officer, Sgt. Vincent Fazio.
At the time of that initial report, the alleged victim told patrol officers that Brophy was a frequent customer of the business where she worked, and that he had a habit of coming in to engage her in conversation. As Brophy’s interest in the woman apparently escalated, he began sending her emails and making phone calls to her place of employment and “began to express his feelings of affection toward the victim.”
As these things commonly go, Brophy then began showing up when the woman’s work shift was over and pursue her as she made her way to her car. “The victim repeatedly told the suspect to leave her alone,” Fazio reported, and even made contact with Ventura Police Detectives out of fear for her safety. It was at that time that Detectives learned Brophy had previously been convicted for stalking.
With that knowledge at hand, Detectives turned the tables on Brophy and stalked him to the victim’s workplace, where he was observed lying in wait for her. Officers made contact with him at that time, and in spite of his attempts to flee on foot, Brophy was summarily taken into custody and transported to Ventura County Jail where he was booked on charges of stalking, possession of stolen property, and resisting an officer.
