RANCHO CORDOVA—The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office has released the name of a woman killed in an alleged hit-and-run crash last week.
She was identified as Joanne Murphy, 65, of Rancho Cordova. Murphy was walking to work on Wednesday morning, October 1 at approximately 6:00 a.m. when she was struck on Fite Circle, south of Horn Road. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Morning and lunch time, we’d see her walking or running back and forth,” said Jer Vang, who works nearby. “It’s very sad. And the person who did this, it’s just pretty sad.”
Rancho Cordova Police Sargeant Gerald Lane said. “It looks like she was trying to cross the street so we’re not sure if she was in the crosswalk or little bit south of the crosswalk.”
The director of VSP Global confirmed that the victim was an employee at VSP Optical laboratories. The building was just a few hundred feet away from where the fatal collision occurred.
During the investigation, Rancho Cordova police officers found a possible suspect vehicle a short distance from the site of the collision. A detective at the scene saw the driver of the vehicle and took her into custody.
Madhu Lata Singh, 56 of Sacramento, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run in Murphy’s death and is being held on a $75,000 bail. Singh is reportedly also an employee of VSP.
Rancho Cordova police are attempting to find witnesses to Murphy’s death. Anyone with information is asked to call police at (916) 874-5115.
