Don’t forget your keys before you leave – Couple nabbed in car theft

A court hearing on Dec 23 at the Santa Clara Hall of Justice revealed just how easy it is for thieves to steal your car if you leave the keys in plain site.

On July 9, 2014 a female victim had parked her black Oldsmobile near Hedding Street in San Jose, but when she returned she was horrified to find that her car had been stolen. 33-year-old Henry Sires and 36-year-old Myisha Johnson were both arrested for PC 496(A), car theft and for outstanding warrants for narcotics possession. A uniformed officer was patrolling the area of Tennyson Lane and Thackeray Lane in San Jose. Sires was seated in the driver’s side with the seats folded back when the patrol unit spotted the vehicle. Johnson was sitting in the passenger seat of the vehicle.

Running a check on the plates the car, information came back that the car had been reported stolen. Sires had a felony outstanding warrant for drugs out of the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office and was quickly detained and arrested.

Johnson, who is Sires’ wife, told arresting officers that she did not ask any questions about the vehicle. She said that she assumed that the vehicle had mechanical problems as her husband left it where he last parked it. The ignition key was found in the front console. But Johnson was also found to be in possession of a wallet belonging to a possible female victim. Credit cards and identification card were recovered with the wallet and booked as evidence.

Sires told officers that he borrowed the vehicle, and he felt that the car might have been reported stolen because he kept the car for so long. Sires said he had the car for a week to two weeks. However, after speaking to the victim on the phone, officers were informed that the car was stolen and that she did not know who Sires was, and that he did not have permission to drive the car.

Both suspects were booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for car theft. At the time of this theft, Sires had already been arrested twice before on similar charges. On March 22, the Santa Clara Sheriff’s office reported that he was arrested on Clifton Drive in San Jose for vehicle theft and possession of a controlled substance and paraphernalia. On May 8, the Alameda County Sheriff reported his arrest for vehicle theft and giving false information to an officer. He was picked up in Castro Valley, at an apartment on Redwood Road.
