SACRAMENTO—Police arrested a local man on Monday, April 27, following a shooting and five-hour standoff at a house in Carmichael.

Jeremiah Hankins, 35, was arrested and booked into Sacramento County Main Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, possession of a firearm by a felon, and domestic violence.
At approximately 9:50 am on Monday, Sheriff’s deputies responded to a duplex on the 6000 block of Madison Avenue, near Manzanita, after receiving several reports of a shooting. When they arrived, a woman in her 30s had been shot at least once and was lying in the driveway, being attended to by neighbors.
The victim, who police believe was involved in a domestic relationship with the suspect, was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Charles Peck School was quiet outside while students and staff remained inside durinng the standoff.
Deputies set up a perimeter around the house, and nearby residences were evacuated in addition to a nearby school, Charles Peck Elementary, being placed on lockdown. Teachers and students were able to conduct school, but had to stay inside. Arrangements were made so they could safely leave on their normal schedules.
For more than five hours, Hankins barricaded himself inside of the residence, ultimately firing multiple rounds at officers three times. Fortunately no one else was injured.
One officer was able to see the suspect inside his home and saw that he was watching television. Sacramento County Sheriff’s Spokesperson Sgt. Lisa Bowman warned TV stations that their live coverage of the event was tipping off Hankins about the positions of the officers surrounding the residence. The suspect also had surveillance cameras on the property.
Sacramento Sheriff Special Enforcement Detail members, along with the Sheriff’s Critical Incident Negotiation Team were about to apprehend Hankins at about 3:05 p.m., when he finally surrendered without further trouble.
Bowman added that the department has a history with the suspect relating to illegal weapons possession.
