SACRAMENTO—A 20-year-old man Sacramento man has died following a drive-by shooting in the parking lot of a South Sacramento Home Depot store on Sunday morning, June 28.
Anthony E. Barajas, 20, was shot from another vehicle at approximately 11:20 a.m. as he drove into a parking lot in the 1400 block of Meadowview Road. He had been driving a gold Toyota Tacoma pickup truck with a raised suspension.
Sacramento police spokesman Officer Justin Brown said the suspect or suspects fired multiple shots toward Barajas from within a vehicle, and were last seen fleeing west on Meadowview Road toward Freeport Boulevard in an older-model four-door sedan. Emergency personnel administered CPR on Barajas before rushing him to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
No arrests have been made. A motive for the shooting is not yet known as the investigation remains underway. Police have not indicated if there is more than one suspect.
Witness Mark Corum, 58, who works in Home Depot’s appliances department, told the Sacramento Bee that he was in front of the store when he heard approximately seven blasts.
“We were out having a smoke and thought it was coming from the fireworks stand, and then about 50 cops showed up. A lady noticed (the driver) was injured and called 911. He was definitely unconscious.”
Corum added that that several passengers were in the victim’s truck and appeared to be unhurt.
In addition to Home Depot, the shopping area is home to businesses such as Wendy’s, Staples and Starbucks. Bullets hit the Wendy’s restaurant, which closed for the day. Police cordoned off several rows of cars with yellow caution tape while investigators combed the scene.
