William Joseph Dexter booking photo, and the school where he and his accomplice were captured
SACRAMENTO—A 19-year-old Sacramento man has been sentenced to seven years in prison after robbing and beating an elderly woman in July.
William Joseph Dexter, who pleaded no contest last month to robbery with great bodily injury, was sentenced on Friday, October 16, by Sacramento Superior Court Judge Richard Couzens.
Dexter and his 16-year-old girlfriend robbed and beat a 73-year-old woman who had given the two a ride home.
On July 2, at approximately 7:00 p.m., the victim was approached at the Raley’s supermarket at Marconi and Watt Avenues by a crying teenage girl, who asked if she could give her a ride to her ill grandfather’s house. When she agreed, the girl’s boyfriend, William Dexter, joined them.
The elderly woman said the two impressed her as clean-cut students, but as a precaution, asked them to pose for a photo, which she took with her cellphone.
The woman drove the two through several nearby neighborhoods because of confusing directions that Dexter and the girl provided. They also asked the woman to drive them to multiple houses.
Dexter then struck the woman with a crowbar on the head, arm and hand. When the woman crashed her car, the two stole her phone and ran.
A neighbor, Coby Hendrix, 25, witnessed the assault and chased Dexter and the girl to nearby Del Paso Manor Elementary School. The two split up, so Hendrix followed the girl, who sat down on a bench. Dexter then gave up and sat down with them. They were arrested a short time later by by a sheriff’s deputy.
The woman suffered head injuries requiring 13 staples and a serious hand injury.
The girl was booked into Sacramento County juvenile hall. Her identity was not released because she is a minor.
