Injured K-9 Making Recovery After Reportedly Being Stabbed by Suspect
K-9 Dre is recovering from wounds suffered in an attack
MORENO VALLEY – Moreno Valley Police K-9 “Dre” was stabbed by an assailant during an assault investigation in the city of Moreno Valley.
On Tuesday, October 20 at approximately 10:11 P.M., officers from the Moreno Valley Police Department were called to the 15000 block of Zaharias regarding an assault. An adult male, suffering from a head wound as a result of being struck with a blunt object, was found at the scene.
Officers were able to determine that Noor Kakar, age 39 of Moreno Valley, was the alleged attacker, and they went to his house where he was found standing on his porch with something that looked like it might be a knife in his hand.
Additional officers were called in to assist, including Officer Schmidt and his K-9 partner Dre, a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois and a member of the Riverside Sheriff’s Department for 3 years.
Kakar went back inside and refused to comply with the officers’ demands that he peacefully exit the residence. When officers went inside the house, they found him holding a knife and continuing to refuse to comply. They then used pepper ball rounds and a taser on Kakar, and the suspect threw the knife at them and ran further into his house.
While Kakar was believed to be unarmed, he still posed a threat to personnel, so K-9 Dre was deployed in an attempt to isolate him, and assist them in detaining Kakar. But the suspect rearmed himself and fought off the dog, ultimately stabbing him. At the point officers were able to use a taser again, arresting Kakar without further incident.
According to a press release from the Sheriff’s Department, “K-9 Dre was immediately transported to a local veterinary hospital, where it was determined he sustained a collapsed lung as a result of the stabbing. K-9 Dre received treatment for his injuries and is resting comfortably at a veterinary hospital.” The heroic dog is expected to make a full recovery.
Kakar also sustained some nonlethal injuries and was transported to the hospital. Upon his medical release, Kakar was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center for several felony violations, including the assault and injury of a police service dog.
