CASTROVILLE—Deputies from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office are still looking a third suspect who eluded them during an incident that occurred last Friday evening. They have arrested two of the three involved in the high-speed chase that ended in a crash.
On Friday, November 27 at 10:26 pm, two Monterey County Sheriff’s Deputies noticed a suspicious 2012 White Chevrolet Malibu driving through a Castroville neighborhood. When the two deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver decided to flee at a high rate of speed through the residential neighborhood.
After leading the deputies on a pursuit through that neighborhood, the driver lost control of his vehicle and slammed into a curb, disabling the vehicle. The occupants of the vehicle tried to flee on foot but the driver was pursued by a Sheriff’s K9 unit, despite repeated warnings to stop. The suspect suffered a bite from the canine.
Another suspect was located hiding under a vehicle by the K9 unit near a residence. The third suspect, who fled into a nearby field, was not located despite an extensive search by deputies.
A search of the vehicle revealed two loaded handguns; a 9mm semi-automatic handgun and a .38 caliber special revolver.
Deputies arrested 19-year-old Martin Arango-Cruz of Marina and a 17-year-old juvenile who were on probation in Monterey County. Cruz was booked in the Monterey County Jail and the juvenile was booked into the Monterey County Juvenile Hall. Both were booked on firearm related charges. Cruz had been arrested in March of this year for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
