Escondido Police Arrest Person of Interest in Homicide

Marco Carapia

ESCONDIDO – Escondido police arrested a man considered a person of interest in a January 25 homicide at an apartment complex in Escondido.

On the evening of January 26, officers responded to reports of screams and a gunshot at the apartment complex. When police arrived, they found a male victim laying in a driveway with a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to Palomar Medical Center for treatment but later died. Police have not yet released the name of the victim.

Marco Carapia, 36, was arrested for a felony probation violation on January 27 after a brief standoff with police at an apartment complex on Washington Avenue near Ash Street, the same complex where the homicide took place on Monday.

Police said they learned Carapia was at the apartment complex and that he refused to comply with officers when they arrived and he barricaded himself inside an apartment.

A SWAT team was called and Carapia called 911 after a two-hour standoff and agreed to turn himself in.
