ELK GROVE—The manager of a Walmart Store in Elk Grove was arrested on March 15, 2016, for her involvement in her boyfriend’s robbery of the store a month earlier.

Shenita Barnes, 33, of Sacramento, was taken into custody at the Walmart store on the 8400 block of Elk Grove Boulevard at approximately 6:30 a.m.

Her boyfriend, Gilbert Smith, 45, is the suspect in a robbery of a store cash room employee on February 9, 2016, at approximately 2:10 a.m. Investigators said it was an “inside job” because Smith knew exactly where the cash room was located.

He was arrested on March 15th at his home in Sacramento.

Both suspects were booked into Sacramento County Jail and face charges of robbery and conspiracy. They are being held in lieu of a $1 million bail.

Elk Grove Police Spokesperson Christopher Trim said that Smith allegedly used a copied management key to access the store’s cash room. He pointed a handgun at an employee and ordered them to give him money. After receiving an undisclosed amount of cash, Smith fled the scene.

Trim says once police identified Smith as the suspect, they were able to tie him to Barnes. Both were arraigned in court on March 17, 2016.
