VENTURA COUNTY — We’ve all seen them: those rows of red traffic cones suddenly appearing in the middle of a busy street, artfully arranged so as to make it impossible for a driver to avoid what’s coming up ahead where all those flashing red patrol car lights announce the location of an official law enforcement DUI Checkpoint.
Designed primarily to keep drivers off the roads who may be in violation of the blood alcohol legal limits or under the influence of medication or controlled substances, those checkpoints never fail to give a driver an adrenaline jolt while sending a very clear message to those who disregard public safety while behind the wheel.
On April 22nd, Ventura Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Brad Clifton made public the results of just such a typical “DUI/Drivers License checkpoint” that took place during the evening hours of April 16th in the City of Moorpark.
Deputies from both Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, the Thousand Oaks Police Department Traffic Bureau, and the Moorpark Police Department Traffic Bureau manned a checkpoint in the rural area of Tierra Rejada Road from the hours of 9:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m., and managed to screen no less than 754 vehicles during that time frame.
After shining flashlights into the eyes of all those hapless drivers, four motorists were arrested for driving without a valid license, seven additional citations for various Motor Vehicle Code violations were issued, and 38-year-old Moorpark resident Andrew Scott Justice was arrested for exceeding the legal blood alcohol limit.
Justice was transported to Ventura County Jail and booked on a charge of driving under the influence, pursuant to which he will in all likelihood learn something about…justice.
