Dave McCann
CLOVIS – A man believed to have killed his estranged wife and mother-in-law in Clovis was arrested early Wednesday along California’s Central Coast.
Dave McCann, 49, was arrested at around 1:30 a.m. in a homeless encampment in Seaside. Police received a tip from a homeless person, who led officers to where McCann was sleeping, Clovis Police Chief Matt Basgall said.
Basgall said that the area where McCann was found was “well off the beaten path, up off a bicycle trail and behind a fence.”
The chief said that without the homeless person’s willingness to step forward with the information, “we’d still be looking for Mr. McCann.”
McCann was the target of a manhunt by multiple police agencies following the murders of Judith Cooper, 68, and Tierney Cooper McCann, 36, on Saturday. The women were found stabbed to death around 4 a.m. at their home in the 700 block of West Omaha Avenue.
Police received a tip that McCann got a ride in the Big Sur area over the weekend and was dropped off at a McDonald’s in Seaside. Police then tracked him to the homeless encampment
“This is a case where Mr. McCann went off the grid. There was no technology being used, no cell phones, there was no ATM transactions or anything else to use. The way this case was made was by old-fashioned police work and getting out there and talking to people and the citizens providing those tips,” Basgall said.
McCann is being transported back to Clovis to face charges of double murder.
