HIGHLAND – A San Bernardino man, arrested on a variety of charges ranging from identity theft and forgery, had been stopped for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a cross walk on Wednesday.
Adam Patrick Leon, 34, was on probation at the time he was stopped at the intersection of Pacific Street and Del Rosa Avenue.
Detective Jose Ruiz and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputy Troy McComas noted that Leon had been visibly shaking, appearing nervous while answering simple questions.
Eventually, Leon was found to be on probation under Governor Brown’s prisoner realignment plan, a state bill requiring states to drop its prison population for offenders with non-violent, non-sexual and non-serious convictions.
Ruiz and McComas, meanwhile, were able to search Leon’s Honda Accord, discovering numerous pieces of mail, numerous checks, along with other people’s personal identifying information, plus a laser printer.
Authorities were able to contact one of the people Leon had personal information on, the victim telling police he had been burglarized in February.
McComas said, “The victim did not know Leon and said he had no reason to have his personal identifying information.”
Investigators are continuing to contact remaining victims and banks of the checks that authorities feel were likely forged by Leon.
Leon, taken to Central Detention Center in neighboring San Bernardino, was arrested for possession of stolen property, forgery, identity theft and a probation violation.
He is scheduled for an appearance in San Bernardino Superior Court on May 31 with bail set at $50,000.
