SANTA ROSA – According to a community bulletin issued by the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), detectives recognized a wanted couple in a vehicle driving in the vicinity of Gardner Avenue and Marble Street in Santa Rosa shortly before 6:30 on Sunday, June 5th.
Detectives had been conducting a follow-up investigation and the driver of the vehicle was a potential suspect that they wanted to question in connection with a stolen firearm. The female passenger was also recognized as someone wanted on outstanding warrants.
Detectives had directed the driver to pulled over when they saw the driver reach into the back seat. The detectives ordered the driver at gunpoint to show his hands. He complied with the detectives orders. During a search of the vehicle, the detectives found a loaded .45 caliber handgun within proximity of where the driver had been reaching into the back seat area. It was later learned that the driver was armed and he was trying to hide the gun.
The gun was not the stolen firearm that the detectives were originally looking for. A search of the couple’s home turned up a large cache of ammunition but no other firearms. The couple was arrested without incident.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as 32-year-old Edwin Jesus Acevedo of Santa Rosa. He was booked into the Sonoma County Jail and faces charges of having a loaded firearm in public, committing a felony while out on bail, driving with a suspended drivers license, possession of heroin, and violating probation. Detectives requested and received a bail enhancement which was set at $150,000.
The passenger of the vehicle was identified as 30-year-old Sarah Christine Mendoza of Santa Rosa. She was booked into the Sonoma County Jail and faces charges of possessing heroin and methamphetamines. Her outstanding warrants are for DUI, shoplifting, petty theft and disobeying a court order. Mendoza is being held with No Bail.
