Caleb Burrett
VENTURA COUNTY — In September of 2014, a three year-old boy suffering from serious injuries was discovered by Ventura County Sheriff’s Department deputies who responded to a 911 Emergency call summoning them to a Camarillo residence.
Two days later, according to VCSD spokesman Sgt. Dean Worthy, the boy “was pronounced deceased at Northridge Hospital.”
Because of the unknown circumstances leading to the boy’s injuries, an investigation immediately commenced, although no arrest was made for the ensuing two years.
Detectives determined that at the time of the boy’s injuries, his mother was cohabiting with Caleb Burrett, 37, and they were married—rather strangely—“on the two-year anniversary of the incident.”
Burrett’s connection with the mother and her child undoubtedly led authorities to identify him as a principal suspect, and for the past 24 months he has been the subject of attempts to determine his whereabouts.
Once he was located living in Jefferson County, Colorado, detectives with the VCSD Major Crimes Bureau coordinated with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office to serve a search warrant upon Burrett’s home in “a remote mountain community in Evergreen, Colorado.”
Deputies made contact with Burrett on October 3rd, at which time he was taken into custody and transported to Jefferson County Jail, where he’s currently held on $1,000,000 bail, “pending extradition to Ventura County.”
He faces charges of child abuse causing great bodily injury or death to a child under the age of 8, which, according to Worthy, “carries a punishment of imprisonment in the state prison for 25 years to life.
