Driver Arrested After Running Over Police Officer’s Foot
BERKELEY, CA — Markeysha Bilal-Fields, 47, was arrested by Berkeley police September 24, on felony charges of evading a police officer and causing an officer’s injury.
The incident started at 1:30 p.m., when Berkeley Police officer Griselda Ferrera began issuing Bilal-Fields a parking citation for parking in a red zone on the corner of Gilman and 6th streets.
In an attempt to avoid the ticket, Bilal-Fields moved her car away from the red zone. According to Berkeley Public Information Officer Andrew Frankel, as Bilal-Fields was driving out of the red zone, she ran over Ferrera’s foot.
The Berkeley Fire Department was summoned to transport Ferrera to a local hospital. Her injuries are not believed to be serious, and she is recovering at home and expected to return to duty soon, according to Frankel.
Police are unsure whether the incident was accidental or intentional. If convicted, Bilal-Fields could face three to seven years in prison or at least a $2,000 fine, Frankel said.
