SALINAS — Child Protective Services and Salinas Police have arrested four family members — Chin Guajardo (64), Jamie Santos (24), Shayla Nukie (21), and Michaella Davis (19) — after a November 7th welfare check exposed the abuse of a 10-month-old child at the Adams Motel on North Main Street.
When CPS and police arrived at the hotel, they were told the child was at another location, at which point officers made arrangements to have the child brought to them by a babysitter. Guajardo, Nukie, and Santos soon arrived at the police department with her and she was found to be in good health. The meeting was documented by both CPS and Salinas Police.
On November 10th, the two agencies conducted another welfare check at the same location after CPS received a referral call concerning the same infant. When officers arrived, the child’s grandmother — Guajardo — tried to pass another infant family member off as the child in question. Officers later found Nukie and Santos in another apartment with the child they were looking for with injuries to her lower extremities and torso.
A subsequent investigation revealed that Davis was in charge of the child when the injuries occurred. She was taken into custody and housed at the Monterey County Jail on charges of child neglect and conspiracy. The other three — Nukie, Guajardo, and Santos — were arrested for two counts of delaying the investigation.
In total, Monterey County Child Protective Services put five children in protective custody.
