“Caregiver” Allegedly Bilks $122,000 from 85 Year-Old Woman
HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA – Responding to a tip, Huntington Beach detectives went to the residence of 85 year-old Constance Wakefield on Friday, March 6, to question her caretaker, Cindi Dee Powell, arresting Powell by the end of the interview.
Powell, 54, who lists her address as 5671 Heil Ave. in Huntington Beach, has several charges mounted against her including Elder Adult Theft: By Caretaker, Grand Theft, Fraud, Forgery and Identity Theft.
According to police, they’ve been investigating this case since December, 2008, and they believe Powell robbed Miss Wakefield of at least $122,000. However, a current press release reports that Wakefield may have been taken for $200,000 or more.
Home Loans and bank accounts were also purportedly opened by Powell in Wakefield’s name.
Police say Miss Wakefield was financially secure until Powell took on the role as her caretaker in 2006, but now even the possession of her home is in jeopardy.
Powell was also reportedly on probation for previous elder abuse.
