SALINAS — Police are investigating the city’s 13th homicide of the year after two men shot two other men outside their own home on the 200 block of Dennis Avenue. One victim died and one was transported to the hospital, with his injuries being considered life-threatening.
On Saturday night just after 11, police were alerted to shots having been fired in the area of Dennis Avenue by the city’s ShotSpotter system, which indicated that 23 shots had been fired.
While en route, police were notified that the shots were coming from a residence. When they arrived, they were advised that at least one victim had sustained gunshot wounds, which they were able to confirm. The 31-year-old male has not been publicly identified and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
In the back yard, police found a 33-year-old man who’d also been shot. Fire and Medical personnel were called to the scene but pronounced him dead.
Both victims were reportedly field workers and residents of Salinas, with no known gang ties. Police are still searching for a motive.
The two suspects apparently fled on foot westbound on Dennis Avenue, but may have eventually gotten into a vehicle.
The incident is being investigated as gang-related, despite no gang affiliation on the victims’ part.
On March 28th, Salinas Police released the name of the man who died — 31-year-old Fidencio Torres-Vega of Salinas.
