SANTA BARBARA COUNTY — There is no question that some people simply watch too much television. That may explain the inexplicable behavior of 25-year-old Santa Maria resident KC Dopp, who appears to have the mind of a TV cop show writer as evidenced by the allegations he made to law enforcement on March 28th, and which have since been proven false.
According to Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Kelly Hoover, Dopp concocted quite a story, telling SBSD deputies “that he was approached by two male suspects” at a local drinking establishment and that “one of the suspects displayed a gun and demanded money.”
As if that wasn’t enough of an episode to recount to the cops, Dopp filled in additional details of his brush with danger, telling deputies that “he was then driven to a bank…and forced to withdraw money from an ATM.”
Sincerely impressed with Dopp’s tale, deputies promptly initiated an investigation of the alleged crime using tools that included “surveillance video from the bar, interviews with the alleged suspects,” and Dopp’s own statements of fact.
Given the totality of evidence gathered over the ensuing 24 hours, detectives realized that they were being led down a garden path on which there was nothing in bloom… or even taking root.
“Deputies determined the crime never occurred,” Hoover reported, which led them to Dopp’s residence on March 29th whereupon he was taken in to custody, arrested, and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail where he was charged with filing a false police report.
