PITTSBURG – Police said a hit and run driver is cooperating in their investigation of an accident that killed a pedestrian early Wednesday morning on busy commuter route.
Officers responded to a report of a traffic accident on southbound Railroad Avenue near Marks Boulevard, shortly before 6 a.m., and found a woman lying on the ground suffering from multiple injuries.
The victim, Alana Willis, a 40-year-old resident of Pittsburg, was pronounced dead shortly afterwards at the scene of the accident, despite the efforts of medics to save her.
Pittsburg police said the driver suspected of striking Willis fled from the scene, but officers located the vehicle believed to have struck her nearby, and detained the suspect.
A portion of Railroad Avenue was closed to traffic for several hours, while Pittsburg police officers investigated what caused the fatal accident.
Police arrested Angelia Spikes, 29, who was charged with felony hit and run. Spikes was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility on September 13, but she was released on bail a few hours later.
Willis is only one of the 1,500 persons killed annually by hit and run drivers, and pedestrians account for 60 percent of those fatalities, according to the latest data from National Highway and Safety Administration.
