Emiliano Zapata Street Academy
OAKLAND — A man has been arrested for allegedly attacking a 14-year-old girl, who was stabbed multiple times with a large kitchen knife, while she was walking to school one morning last week.
The victim was apparently ambushed outside the Medical Hill Rehabilitation Center at 475 29th Street in Oakland, a nursing home located on the same block as Emiliano Zapata Street Academy—the alternative high school where she’s a student.
The suspect, who lives near the school, was hiding in some greenery on October 17 before he allegedly grabbed the schoolgirl and stabbed her about five times. Witnesses attempted to intervene, but the attacker also threatened them with the knife.
Despite being bloodied, the girl managed to run away from her attacker. She suffered facial and lung wounds and was taken to a hospital to receive medical treatment.
Witnesses followed the fleeing suspect to Summit Street at the end of the block before responding police officers arrived on the scene. The witnesses later positively identified Oakland resident Vincent M. Bates, 26, as the man who stabbed the teenager.
Officers disabled the suspect with a taser gun when he purportedly pulled out several knives from his pockets and threatened them. Two officers were injured during a confrontation with Bates and required medical treatment.
Bates was arrested at 9 a.m. and received a medical evaluation before he was transported to Santa Rita Jail. He is charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, use of deadly or dangerous weapon, inflicting great bodily harm, and child endangerment.
