COVELO // 35-year-old Misty Lee Hawkins is in custody in Mendocino County after an attempted robbery and assault at Keith’s Market on the 76000 block of Highway 162.
On December 28th at around 4:30 PM, County Sheriff’s Deputies arrived at Keith’s after being advised that a woman — described as Native American, wearing a mini-skirt and tall black boots/socks — had been detained by Covelo Tribal Police.
Responding deputies made contact with a store employee, who told them that Hawkins, the woman in question, had entered the store and walked out with a basket containing several food items and bottles of alcohol without paying. When he tried to stop her, she struck him in the left side of the face, causing minor injury. That was when she let go of the basket, which the employee grabbed and took back into the store.
Then Hawkins followed him, to which he responded by ordering her to leave. Hawkins began screaming at him, then picked up a metal pipe and threw it at him. Luckily, he managed to jump out of the way.
By the time all was said and done, Sheriff’s Deputies had Hawkins in custody on charges relating to the incident, as well as an unrelated outstanding misdemeanor warrant out of Mendocino County Superior Court for failure to appear.
She is held at the Mendocino County Jail on $82,500 bond.
