Car thief shot, arrested by Fresno police
FRESNO – A gang member and prolific car thief was shot and arrested by police officers following a short chase on Wednesday.
Members of the Fresno Police Department’s career criminal auto theft team were following 32-year-old Wallace Omar Alley, who was driving a stolen vehicle, on Wednesday morning when the incident happened, Chief Jerry Dyer said.
“(Alley) is someone who has been responsible for stealing large number of cars in our community and he belongs to the Bulldog gang, so we were very familiar with him,” Dyer said.
Around 11 a.m., the suspect pulled the stolen SUV into the Get and Go Market at Tulare and Peach streets, across from Easterby Elementary School. A woman got out of the car to go inside the convenience store, police said. That’s when police moved in to make an arrest.
“The officers attempted to detain him at that time, but unfortunately he resisted,” Chief Dyer said.
According to police, Alley drove his vehicle in the direction of one of the officers. That officer and one other officer fired shots at the suspect. Alley was hit twice in the upper torso, Dyer said.
The bullet wounds didn’t stop him from trying to make his getaway. Alley drove away, heading westbound on Tulare, but shortly lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a house just west of Willow Avenue.
Alley was rushed to the hospital, where he is expected to recover from his injuries. A female passenger was also taken to the hospital for injuries she received from the impact of the crash.
Alley was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, with possibly more charges to be added later, police said. Authorities believe Alley is responsible for many stolen vehicles in Fresno.
“He is considered to be one of our most prolific auto thieves in the city today. He’s stolen dozen of vehicles that we’re aware of,” Dyer said.
